Ever wondered how much of food we consume in a year. Think! Calculate! Now subtract. Think about how much food you waste in a month rather than a year. It should scare you. It should scare you because with that food we could feed those who sleep hungry every night and those who are deprived of even a small meal.

Well I’m not going to calculate how food you waste in a month. But give it a thought. So now the question is what do we do? We aren’t saints every day or Mother Theresa. But I’m sure there is a way out. At least we can start with not wasting food in our plates. There is something I’d like to share, something that my parents have always taught me. Whenever I dine at hotels or restaurant I make sure I pack up all the remaining food and give to my watchman or even the dogs and cats on the street if I don’t see anyone on the road given the fact that I go to dinners late and by the time we are done a hungry soul has already gone to bed. It’s just a family tradition I could call it that we don’t waste even a grain on our plate and who won’t know the saying sharing is caring. So I think this solves the problem when we go out for dinners.

What do you do to not waste food at home? What do you do with fussy eater at home like you who won’t eat the same food the next day. Not because of any particular reason but I just get bored of eating the same food the next day. My wonderful mom has come up with a solution finally after years of struggle and research. She invented something knows as ‘turn the old into new’. So what she does is that she’ll make a new dish out of the remaining or left overs. Like dal one day would become dal fry the other day, and prawns one day would become prawn chilly fry the next day, rice one day would become masala rice the next day. Initially I had no idea my mom did this to get her fussy daughter to eat and waste food but now since I knew I keep asking her for every meal she prepares if it’s made of any of the left overs.

But on a serious note have you thought of millions of people who sleep hungry? Thousands who can’t make ends meets and have to compromise on food? Hundreds who’ve died due to malnutrition and starvation? If not think now! What could you do as a family, provide a meal to your sweeper or watchman or your maid. See the smile they’ll wear and there is immense happiness in doing so. For any of our birthdays mom would give all 8 watchman dinner. What could your company do? Adopt an old age home or an orphanage. Why is there shortage of food in some states and not in the other? It’s because we have bought all the food they grow in their states. If not anything they do deserve something out of their sheer hard work to work in the scorching heat, with no access to any kind of transport facilities and no proper food, clothes and shelter and electricity to run their machines in the fields. Yes I am talking about our villages and the outskirts.

I didn’t want this to sound demanding. But for those reading please do not waste food. Food is life, a means of livelihood and a basic necessity that no one should be deprived of. No one is asking us to eat less or feed the dogs on the street. But consciously give it a thought. This will not only change your life but mould you into a good human being and a concerned citizen who will just not talk and complaint about the issues in our country but will act appropriately.
