GETTING KIDS TO EXERCISE
Kids are the most unfit of all times. Right from eating junk food to being glued to their play stations and other digital devices. Children, teenagers and adults need to have at least 30 minutes of some kind of physical activity daily. Television watching, electronic games and inactive parents gave rise to this ever growing lazy kids resulting in lack of exercise. There are so many distractions for kids not to exercise. Kids need to learn at a very young age that fitness can be fun! Children have a short attention span of 20 minutes when it comes to fitness yet an unlimited capacity to watch television or play electronic games.
One of the best ways to increase the overall fitness of the family is to exercise together. There are a variety that the whole family can do together motivation must come from mom and dad through creative activities, physical sessions, playing pool together, swimming, cycling, running. Set goals together with your kids and reward them for every goal they achieve. This will keep them motivated and persistent. But remember kids fatigue in a shorter time, and become both over-heated and dehydrated in a shorter time than adults.
Little children don’t need much encouragement to stretch like a cat, run like a tiger, or jump like a kangaroo. And they’ll have a blast doing it. Break out an action oriented dance video game, to get youngsters expending some energy. Younger children may just enjoy putting on some music to dance up a storm together. Let each kid take a turn to plan an activity for the day. Exercise should never be punitive. Don’t make your child run laps or do push ups as punishment. Instead try using physical activity as a reward. Let him/her play his/her favorite sport for a longer time than the usual play time.
Everyone should enjoy the session and they should not be rigid or competitive in nature, especially where young children are involved. Family physical time results in close family bonding. Variety is the spice. Choose a few different activities to get in shape faster and avoid injury. If you do the same routine over and over your body will adapt then cease to progress. Go for walks, play at the park or the beach. As kids get older involve them or rather introduce them to sports like football, badminton, pool, hockey, throwball, volleyball etc and choose to take vacations that always include swimming, biking, walking and other activities such as river rafting, mountain climbing etc. I suggest you get adventurous with your kids. Show them videos that they could follow and practice at home. Let them spend less time in this electronic world and more in the natural world.
For kids to get excited about exercising, parents have to be excited. Children live what they learn.
